This is really heavy but it works. It might be difficult for an older person to carry it up stairs, but it is one powerful vacuum. I like the bagless feature.

Hoover U6626-900 Self Propelled WindTunnel Bagless Upright Vacuum Cleaner

This high-tech upright vacuum is, very simply, for the housecleaner who needs everything. Self-propelled going forward and backward and employing Hoover's most advanced suction technology, the 1440-watt vacuum has every feature imaginable: a sealed, hygienic cup to capture dirt; a powered hand tool for stairs, upholstery, and automobiles; a dirt sensor with two sensitivity settings that displays a red light when large or embedded dirt particles require additional cleaning strokes; a headlight to illuminate the 15-inch cleaning path; a dual-brush agitator with multiple height settings for thorough carpet cleaning (it shuts off with a toe control for bare floors); edge groomers to remove dirt near baseboards and furniture; three filters--a prefilter, an antiallergen HEPA cartridge-filter, and a washable final filter--to ensure clean air returns to the room; and a no-touch system that automatically cleans the prefilter and HEPA filter when the dirt cup is emptied. Accompanying the vacuum are an upholstery nozzle and dusting brush that store in a handy front compartment along with the powered hand tool. A crevice tool stores inside one of the two extension wands that attach to the extra-long stretch hose. (An additional stretch hose that attaches to the first hose can be purchased separately.) The vacuum comes with a 31-foot power cord, assembles in three easy steps with four Phillips-head screws (included).
